New affordable housing dates ‘stick in the gullet’

The recent further, never-ending update on the new delivery dates for the Chatham Views and Bob Peliza Mews developments will no doubt have provoked a deep sigh of relief from the very many long-sufferingpurchasers who have been waiting for their keys for so long.

The announcement sticks in the gullet, however, given that Bob Peliza Mews was announced 10 years ago and Chatham Views 8 years ago. What the Government should be doing is apologising to those individuals, many of them with or wanting to start families, who have had to put their lives on hold.

The Government should also be apologising to the continuingly growing number of a whole new generation who have come of age in the intervening 10 years, who are stuck in limbo as they cannot access affordable housing. We know of many people from their mid-20s and 30s, some of whom may earn decent wages who wish to live independent, aspirational lives but simply cannot afford the exorbitantly high prices in the open market.

Damon Bossino said: “The GSD is of the firm view that government has a hugely important responsibility to deliver a roof over the heads of our people in an affordable and timely way, something which the GSLP should at least have the humility of acknowledging that they have failed to do in respect of these developments.”

The Government should also now reveal when Phase 2 of Bob Peliza Mews will be completed, somethingwhich was so glaringly omitted from their statement.
