GSD Questions Northern Defences Contract Award
Yesterday’s announcement regarding the Northern Defences tender has raised serious questions that require immediate answers.
The award of the potentially lucrative 20-year contract has been granted to Fortress Attractions Ltd, one of whose shareholders is a well-known supporter of the governing GSLP. This individual served as an election agent in the last general election, as well as in those of 2011, 2015, and 2019.
The GSD has several other questions related to the details of the tender, but it was unable to pose these in time for next week’s Parliament meeting, as the announcement was made shortly after the deadline for filing questions had passed. However, the obvious political connection between the successful tenderer of this multi-million-pound government contract and the governing party raises significant concerns.
During the recent general election, the GSD made the probity and transparency of public contract awards a central pillar of its campaign. The need for reform in financial governance remains relevant today. As part of its series of measures to tackle this long-standing and pernicious issue, the GSD committed to introducing an anti-abuse law that would prevent or restrict individuals ‘closely or directly’ related to the Government from tendering for or being awarded any government contract.
Damon Bossino MP stated, “It is essential to understand how this close political connection was addressed in the tender process, if it was addressed at all. The GSD therefore calls on the Government to explain the position.”
What is clear to the GSD is that until specific rules governing this important area are established, public perception regarding conflicts of interest and political influence will continue to arise.
