International Women’s Day 2025: For ALL Women and Girls – Rights. Equality. Empowerment.
This year’s International Women’s Day theme — “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights.
Equality. Empowerment”— is a powerful call to action. It reminds us that while progress has been made, the fight for true equality, equity, and empowerment is far from over. Women everywhere around the world must have access to the same rights, opportunities, and choices.
Observed annually on March 8, International Women’s Day is an opportunity to honour women’s achievements, raise awareness of gender inequalities, and advocate for meaningful empowerment. But it’s also a reality check—a reminder that barriers still exist, and there is much work left to do.
We’ve made strides, but gender equality is still not where it should be. This day is an important moment to recognise the invaluable contributions women make in every sector and every corner of our community, every single day. It is on us to continue paving the way for future generations—ensuring that women and girls have the freedom, fairness, and opportunities they deserve.
A world that is free from bias, stereotypes, and discrimination doesn’t happen by chance—it requires consistent, deliberate action. A truly diverse, equitable, and inclusive society must do more than celebrate differences; it must actively dismantle the barriers that hold women back.
One area where progress is sorely needed is parental leave policies. These policies send a strong message that caregiving is not just a woman’s responsibility—it should be a choice shared equally by both parents. If we are truly committed to gender equality, then parents must have the freedom and flexibility to decide how to balance work and family life in a way that works for them.
In conversations about gender equality, we must also recognise and value the contributions of men. Achieving equality is not about division—it’s about working together. Men play a vital role in these discussions and in shaping a fairer, more balanced world. Their support is not just welcome—it is essential.
The GSD remains fully committed to advancing this crucial area of equality and keeping it at the forefront of our policy agenda.
Shadow Minister for Equality, Atrish Sanchez, notes ‘Later this month, my colleague Joelle Ladislaus MP will join the Gibraltar Delegation representing Gibraltar at the 11th Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians British Islands and Mediterranean Regional Conference. She will speak about the challenges of balancing work and family life as a woman in politics—an issue that so many, across all industries and walks of life, can relate to. As another woman in politics, I am proud to see Gibraltar’s female politicians stepping onto the international stage and making their voices heard.
Women continue to break barriers and shatter glass ceilings—but their successes must be celebrated, supported, and amplified. It is up to all of us to lift each other up and push for a world where every woman and girl has the chance to thrive.’
Today, and every day, we reaffirm our commitment to forging a future that is fairer, stronger, and more equal for all.
