a secure and prosperous future

Our Values

Pivotal to the success and future of any political party or organization is its philosophy.

Our values are fundamental to the success that we have all enjoyed over the past 15 years, crucial to this is a solid foundation based on responsible government, with a sensible vision for growth and prosperity.

Security

Gibraltar has been plagued over the past 300 years when it comes to political security. The ultimate support of the British Government, vital as it is to us, is quite clearly not upheld in a way that fully reflects and delivers our legitimate rights and aspirations as a people. Thus, in the face of continuing pressure from Spain in their unrelenting claim for sovereignty and the qualified position of Britain in defending and up holding our rights, we have had to be courageous, imaginative, bold and intelligent in our policies to ensure their effective protection and to make political progress as a people, whilst ensuring a climate of stability in which our economy, and our society could flourish.

Since 1996, led by Peter Caruana and the GSD Government, Gibraltar has never been so prosperous, so protected and so secure as a community. Whilst we have continued to endure threats from Spain and from Britain the GSD has never swayed from or faltered in its resolute pursuit and defence of strengthening our national identity and position every time it has been threatened or challenged wherever the threat or challenge may have come from.

As a result Gibraltar today enjoys a level of political security that it has never before enjoyed, based on 3 key achievements:

• We have seen an end to bilateral talks about our homeland between U.K. and Spain in the Brussels Process and we have obtained from the U.K. a new improved commitment that it would NOT even sit down with Spain to discuss our Sovereignty without our consent.

• We have secured “safe and dignified “ dialogue in the trilateral forum, in which we are present IN OUR OWN RIGHT and with OUR OWN VOICE, in a dialogue that is open in agenda and thus NOT predetermined on the question of sovereignty, and in which forum we have a RIGHT of veto where nothing can be agreed unless Gibraltar agrees!

• We have secured a new Constitution with the U.K. which maximizes our self government and control of our own affairs, while consolidating and retaining our British Sovereignty and constitutional links with Britain in a non-colonial relationship.

This groundbreaking progress has been the fruit of the GSD’s ability to conduct our foreign affairs intelligently and boldly, reasonably and sensibly despite their complexity. Gibraltar’s full range of needs and interests cannot be protected or advanced by simplistic and jingoistic sound bites and attitudes however easy those may be to make, and however justified they may be.

The trilateral forum, has not only allowed us to establish more normal inter-governmental contacts and relations with Spain, but also to solve in our favour some of the big issues of the time, in which EU litigation had failed us, eg: our “350” telephone code and mobile roaming is now recognised by Spain, and our airport now enjoys FULL EU rights and status.
